Recent Email Scams

Hello pervert, I’ve sent this from your….

Had quite a few people mention to me after receiving emails starting with the first line similar to the above. Usually in a state of panic that someone they don’t know has access to their email address and “videos” of them from a software that has been installed on their laptop, phone, tablet.

This is just another rouse in the online scam world to try and extract money from people using fear, urgency etc. Not even a new one either, a recycled one that has been brought out of retirement in force.

Do not respond. Do not email back (this only confirms someone is monitoring the e-mail address they have sent the mail to). Do not pay. Do not send bitcoin, litecoin etc.

A few simple steps to work out that this is most definitely a ‘phishing’ scam:

  1. Check the actual sent from e-mail address. NOT the email address that appears to be yours that has been formatted in the description line of the message.
  2. Does this email (apart from knowing your email address, which is generally quite public knowledge) actually list anything at all about you? Surely if they were that sure of the information they had, they’d want to ensure they got their money so would provide an example of what they had?
  3. The usual scope for these emails is to impose a deadline, to increase the urgency and panic to send a sum of crypto currency somewhere. Does yours have a “deadline from opening”? If it does, it’s another tell tale sign.
  4. It even appears that some of these emails are also now spelling hacked as “haked” in the title. This is to try and fool the mailboxes so that they don’t go straight to spam where they belong.

There has been mass reports online of a recent spike in these sort of mails, literally Google the first line of the mail and you will see reports and articles from all the usual outlets. I’m sure these scams will continue for much much longer. Do not respond. Do not pay.

Simply. Block Sender. Delete. Move On.

Any further ones you receive, may contain more information that is completely publicly available. Again….
